I have recently backed up my iPhone 6s through iCloud and restored that information to an iPhone 8 using iCloud, but when I did the backup, iMessage was not connected to iCloud. When I finished the set up on the iPhone 8, my number is being used on iMessage and not my Apple ID as well. I went to settings and turned iMessage on for iCloud but nothing happened so I tried going to settings>messages and tapped “use Apple ID for iMessage” but it did not respond to that command. Is there a way to fix this issue?

What Does An Apple Id Look Like
- Use iMessage apps in Messages on iPhone. In the Messages app, you can decorate a conversation with stickers, play a game, share songs, and more—all through iMessage apps—without leaving Messages.
- Before you can use the Messages application or the FaceTime application, you need to identify which online account you will use. A chat account is your identification and contact information that other people use when they send text-based messages to you in the Messages application or initiate video calls in FaceTime. This video clarifies what iMessage is, and how it works with these two.
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings Messages, then turn on iMessage. On your Mac, open Messages, then do one of the following: If you’re signing in for the first time, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Sign In.

IMessage uses your Apple ID – that's how it can work on an iPod touch, which doesn't have a cellular radio or a phone number. You need to use unique Apple IDs. – daGUY Mar 4 '13 at 18:03 Add a comment.
